Located in Bormes-les-Mimosas, about 15 km from Saint-Tropez, in the district of Cabasson, bordered by the famous beaches of Cabasson, Estagnol or Pellegrin, Fort Brégançon is a true architectural jewel. Perched on a rocky peak and open to the general public since 2014, it is the holiday resort of the French presidents. Built between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries, it is one of the most beautiful monuments of the Var and the PACA region.
Fort Brégançon marvels in more ways than one, starting with its geographical location. Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, it seems to have been deposited on an islet, a few meters from the coast. The presidents go there today mostly by helicopter, but a jetty has been set up to facilitate its access to visitors. From the end of the fifteenth century, it became a royal fortress and a state property to the Revolution. After having played the role of military fortress for several centuries, it attracts the first heads of state after the Second World War. General de Gaulle stayed there for a few days in 1964. In 1968, it was classified as a historical monument and officially declared the place of residence of the Presidents of the Republic. Georges and Claude Pompidou, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, Francois Mitterrand, Jacques Chirac, Nicolas Sarkozy, Francois Hollande: all go to Fort Brégançon several times. In May 2018, Emmanuel Macron and his wife spend their first weekend in their new residence.
François Hollande decided in 2013 to open the fort to the general public, while maintaining its status as a presidential residence. Managed by the Center des monuments nationaux, it receives the first visitors during the summer of 2014.
