The cradle of Western civilization and connected to the Atlantic Ocean by the Strait of Gibraltar between southern Spain and the African continent, the Mediterranean Sea covers an area of more than 2,500,000 km2. More than 20 European and African countries have a maritime façade that opens onto the Mediterranean. In France, the Mediterranean coast starts from the Côte Vermeille in the Pyrenees-Orientales in Occitanie, goes up the coast of Languedoc Roussillon (Aude, Hérault, Gard) and then the Provençal coast that corresponds to the Côte d'Azur (Bouches-du-Rhône, Var, Alpes-Maritimes). This intercontinental sea extends eastward to the coasts of Turkey, Libya and Syria via Italy, Croatia and Greece. In France, the Mediterranean coast between the Franco-Spanish border and the Giens peninsula is also known as the Gulf of Lion. The beaches of this stretch of coast are about 8 hours by car from Paris (800 km) and 4 hours from Lyon (400 km). Did you get your map of the Mediterranean? The Mediterranean is a popular holiday destination for French and foreign visitors, especially during the summer. Like the entire Mediterranean arc, it is also an important crossing point to reach Spain and Portugal from Eastern Europe. For all these reasons, this area is very well served by the motorway. All the towns and seaside resorts of Provence built on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea are close to a motorway. The car is therefore an excellent means of transport to move from one place to another. The bus is a good alternative to the car if you don't have a vehicle. However, traffic jams (sometimes very large) can form at the entrance to the most frequented beaches and towns, especially in high season. In this case, the train is an alternative means of transport, which may be more advantageous. Traffic is particularly heavy between Nice and Cannes. The distance is short (about 35 km) but the journey can last by car in the summer. The train is a sure bet that will drop you off in 30 minutes in the city centre.
